From the Midwest to the Rest of the World

Students enjoy the Bloomington campus, considered one of the most beautiful in the U.S.

Indiana University Bloomington takes great pride in its long-standing commitment to international engagement. Set in the rural Midwest, IU’s global connections may be surprising to some who don’t know us. Some highlights:

  • A program to teach Central Asian languages to army officers during World War II that became our Summer Language Institute, which continues to teach languages that go untaught at most universities.
  • Our center for international students first opened on the Bloomington campus in 1951.
  • Close and longstanding ties with Liberia, leading to our awarding an honorary degree to Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in 2008 in recognition of her efforts for rebuilding Liberia following a long period of civil war.
  • Illustrious professors like Thubten J. Norbu, the eldest brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who spent his career as an Indiana University professor since his arrival in 1959, by invitation of the then IU President Herman B. Wells.
